Curriculum Overview

Key Themes

The history curriculum is built around important themes that help pupils connect different time periods and events.

  1. Comparison – Pupils explore how daily life has changed over time and what has stayed the same. They compare different eras of history.
  2. Significance – Important people and events are studied to understand their impact on everyday life and how they shaped traditions, beliefs, and progress.
  • Hierarchy, Power, and Conflict (KS2 Focus)

Hierarchy: Pupils learn about how societies were structured, what stayed the same, and what changed in leadership and class systems.

Power: They explore how rulers and institutions have influenced laws, rights, and freedoms.

Conflict: The effects of wars, revolutions, and disputes on daily life are examined.

These themes run through history lessons, helping children connect the past to the present and develop critical thinking skills.

The geography curriculum helps children understand their relationship with the world around them, from their local area to the UK and beyond.

  • Place and Space – Children explore their own place in the world, learning about their local environment, the UK, and global locations. This helps them understand how places are connected and how geography shapes communities.
  • Comparison – Pupils compare human and physical features in different locations, looking at similarities and differences between their own surroundings and places across the UK and the world.
  • Interconnectivity (KS2 Focus) – In Key Stage 2, children examine how the world is linked through transport, trade, resources, and culture. They explore how global connections shape economies, societies, and everyday life.

These themes run through geography lessons, helping pupils develop a strong understanding of the world and how it continues to change over time.
