Emerald and Topaz (Y3/Y4)

We have two mixed (Year 3 and Year 4) classes in Key Stage 2.

Emerald Class is taught by Mrs Sarah Daffurn (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday) and Mrs Marie Watts (Thursday). Mrs Daffurn is also Assistant Headteacher, Key Stage 2 Leader and the English Subject Leader for English.

Topaz Class teachers are Mrs Janine Mead (Monday to Thursday) and Mrs Liz Pincombe (Friday).

PE is taught to all three classes by Mr Marc Taylor.

Further Curriculum information may be requested from the class teacher or the school office.

We will be reading a non-chronological report on the ‘Somerset Sizzler’ and writing about different dragons. We will also be reading a historical fantasy quest story called ‘Sigurd and the Dragon’, then writing our own quest stories. There will be spellings to learn at home and a weekly spelling test. We will also be looking for evidence of the children using these spelling words in their own writing. Reading will continue to be of great importance and we would like children to regularly read at home. Please make sure reading books and reading diaries are in school every day.

Our main focus in maths this term will be to make sure that all children have secured a sound understanding of place value. This will involve reading, writing, ordering and partitioning numbers. We will also be learning the importance of understanding the value of each digit in a number. It is also important that children continue to learn their multiplication tables so please take any opportunities to practise them at home!

We will be linking our work in Art to the Vikings and thinking about the work of craft makers. We will be designing runes and sculptures then using clay and ModRoc to create pieces of art

Our work in Geography will also be linked to the Vikings. We will be looking at maps to discover where the Vikings came from and travelled to. We will be locating different countries within Europe and identifying areas within the United Kingdom.

Each class will have two PE sessions per week. We will be working on developing skills in Dance and ‘Multi skills’. The children in Emerald Class will be swimming this term on a Friday morning. The other classes will swim later in the year.

Please ensure children have their PE in school on the correct days for their lessons.

New beginnings: we will be encouraging the children to see themselves as valued individuals within our community. They will be exploring a range of feelings from happiness and excitement to sadness and fearfulness, and learning different problem solving strategies.

We will be learning about e-safety and staying safe online. We will also be using computers to support our learning with DB Primary, Active Learn and Bug Club.

What is important to me? We will be thinking about human nature and characteristics. We will be considering the role of different communities and exploring some Christian and Jewish festivals to deepen our understanding of what is important in life.

Bonjour! We will be learning greetings in French this term; practising the conversational skills needed to say hello, goodbye and find out how we are feeling.

Vikings! We will be learning about how and why the Vikings invaded Britain, where they settled and how they lived. We will also be looking at Viking Mythology, runes and feasts. This is a really exciting topic!

We will be listening to, responding to and comparing a range of different music types.

Children will be given homework tasks on a Friday, to be handed in by the following Wednesday. Please try to support their learning at home and encourage them to look after their folders. Children will also need to bring reading books and reading diaries to school every day.

Class News

At home, you can help by:

  • Reading as many times a week as you can with your child. This could be the school reading book or enjoying reading another book at home. Remember, it is really valuable for you to read to your child as well. When you read with your child, please fill in his/her reading journal. It is also vital that they bring both reading book and journal to school every day.
  • Taking time to help your child learn his/her weekly spellings. This will also form part of the homework tasks each week.
  • Spending some time practising times tables with your child. This is so important in all our maths work. Did you know that by the end of Year 4, children should be able to recall all their multiplication facts up to 12x12?
  • Making sure your child completes homework! Try setting aside a specific time each week to sit down and look at it together. How about Saturday morning after breakfast? That way, it will be done before you start to enjoy your weekend!

The children will be taking part in a range of PE activities this term. Please ensure that they have their PE kit in school, including well-fitting daps or trainers, the school PE kit with logo and a clean pair of socks. A plastic bag kept inside the PE bag is always useful too! It is important that children have the correct PE kit for the weather... we still sometimes go outside in the winter!
